Retinol 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Starting
Retinol 101: The Complete Guide
Retinol is the most studied, most proven anti-aging ingredient in skincare. But it's also the most misunderstood. Here's everything you need to know before adding it to your routine.
What Is Retinol?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that speeds up cell turnover. It tells your skin to shed dead cells faster and produce new ones quicker. Over time, it stimulates collagen production, reduces fine lines, and evens skin tone.
The Benefits
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Improves skin texture. Minimizes the appearance of pores. Helps with acne. It's one of the few ingredients that addresses almost every skin concern simultaneously.
How to Start
Begin with a low concentration (0.25% or 0.3%) twice a week at night. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin. Wait 5 minutes before applying moisturizer. Gradually increase to every other night, then nightly as your skin adjusts.
Managing Side Effects
Mild redness, dryness, and flaking are normal in the first 2-4 weeks. Use the sandwich method (moisturizer → retinol → moisturizer) to reduce irritation. Never apply retinol to wet skin. If irritation is severe, reduce frequency.
The Rules
1. Only at night — retinol degrades in sunlight. 2. Always wear SPF the next day — retinol increases sun sensitivity. 3. Don't mix with vitamin C, AHAs, or BHAs in the same session. 4. Skip retinol if pregnant. 5. Be patient — visible results take 8-12 weeks.
Our Recommendation
Pair retinol with our Marine Therapy Facial Wash (gentle cleansing won't irritate) and a rich night cream (for the dryness retinol can cause). Take NAD+ drops daily to support the cellular repair process retinol triggers.
